One of the first designs for what would be the approved concept design
One idea was a sphere made of many interlocking and sliding circles that would rotate under and over each other expanding and transforming outwards as it rolled.
Different approach. A crawling robot sphere.

The idea of this was that it was supposed to be a small metal ball tat the player would remove from his vest. Then once placing it on the ground it would roll out transforming and expanding into a football. These are a few of the concepts as we went down a more mechanical look.
